Choose the same day each week to take this medicine if you are on a weekly dosing schedule. Take Plaquenil with a meal or a glass of milk. Potassium deficiency, or hypokalemia, can cause weakness and muscle cramps, excessive urination and thirst or abnormal heart rhythm, a potentially fatal complication of low potassium. Supplementation may be necessary when potassium levels in the body fall dangerously low due to kidney disease, excessive sweating. Over-the-counter supplements and multivitamins cannot contain more than 100 milligrams of potassium because the mineral can cause serious side effects in people with kidney disease and may also interact with certain high blood pressure medications and over-the-counter painkillers, as well as laxatives.
