Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as. I recently decided to stop taking Plaquenil because I was having constant chest pains even more so than I usually have due to Lupus. Since I have not taken it my chest feels so much better which is odd because chest pain is not listed as a side effect. Also I noticed that the Plaquenil I think was making me feel different but not in a good way. I have read about people stopping P & flaring up. Those who stopped it abruptly had real problems similar to what you are experiencing. If you really need to get off it, I would taper down slowly, very slowly. There is a similar posting on Healthunlocked, "Why oh why did u stop taking plaquenil." You may want to check it out.

I'm surprised that some of you have had to stop taking plaquenil due to surgeries, I have gone through numerous of surgeries and I have another surgery coming up in January and my rheumy does not have me stop my plaquenil she said there is no harm in me continuing it. I wonder why some rheumy's keep us on and some take us off of them. Karen Answer. Plaquenil does not need to be stopped for surgery so it can be restarted after the procedure. Although in studies Celebrex does not cause increased bleeding, unilke other older NSAIDs, some surgeons still advise to stop it to be safe. In general, Celebrex can be restarted the day after the procedure once the risk of bleeding is over.

Hydroxychloroquine and eye symptoms - I took plaquenil in 2005 and loved it. Best drug ever! Then suddenly I started to have eye pain in 2007 for no reason and even ear pain. I stopped it and it went away. My eye doc had no explanation and i had never had any signs of toxicity in my eyes.
