    Rash with plaquenil

Note the presence of a confluent, erythematous eruption that is not only in a photodistribution but is now on the breasts and upper abdomen. Yes with plaquenil generic, I have itching, intense I could scratch through my skin. But it does calm down. I also get weird rashes but I get those from the Lupus. I find the disease is being treated and the med is attacking the inflammation, so one of the first places inflammation shows up is the skin since it is the largest organ we have. I broke out with a rash after being on it for a week. I was also on a mild muscle relaxer for about 3 weeks prior to plaquenil. I got off both then started back on plaquenil. No rash so I assumed it was the other med even though I was on it longer and before the plaquenil. Did not resume the other meds. With Plaquenil, however, the most commonly prescribed anti-malarial, this sort of damage occurs only in 1 out of 5,000 people who take the drug for five years or more. For this reason though, it is important that you see an ophthalmologist for an exam before starting to take an anti-malarial medication for your lupus.

I am going to call my rheumatologist in the morning to see if this is something I need to be concerned.

Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Skin rashPlaquenil can rarely cause a rash. Patients who experience this rare side effect should stop taking this medicine and contact their doctor. Headaches – Plaquenil can rarely cause a headache. Sun Sensitivity – Plaquenil can sometimes make the skin more sensitive to the sun. As noted, the most common antimalarial used is Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine, which is dosed by weight and used for persistent rashes. Evidence suggests that early use may delay systemic onset of lupus.
