Hydroxychloroquine is used to treat lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. It isn’t fully understood how this drug works to treat lupus erythematosus or rheumatoid arthritis. That means you may need to take it with other drugs. It treats malaria by killing the parasites that cause the disease.

Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is an effective medication for autoimmune conditions and malaria that comes with less side effects than other DMARDs. Reduces inflammation and cell replication. Otrexup methotrexate is the first-choice treatment for many types of cancer and arthritis, but it has many side effects. Dec 28, 2017 I know Plaquenil has helped me a ton, because I tried going off of it once to see if I really needed it. The first two weeks weren't bad, as Plaquenil has a high half-life and there was still some Plaquenil in my body. After that, my Lupus got progressively worse until I gave up and re-started the Plaquenil after 6 weeks of being off it. Mostly in my arms hands and ankles. Then I started to notice that I was having pain in my back and left hip as the day wore on and especially after taking the plaquenil in the evening. I am also taking methotrexate, which I have been on for years and prednisone which I also have been on for years. Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated.
