Red blood cells are usually round and have some give to them -- their shape lets them move easily throughout your body. But when you have sickle cell disease SCD, some cells are curved -- like a sickle--and hard. They don’t flow as easily, and they can get stuck in the small blood vessels of your chest, belly. Children who inherit the sickle cell S gene from only one parent and the normal genes for hemoglobin A from the other parent will not have the disease, but will have the sickle cell trait AS. People with AS generally have no symptoms of the disease and lead normal lives, but can pass the gene on to their children. Sickle cell disease SCD is a group of blood disorders typically inherited from a person's parents. The most common type is known as sickle cell anaemia SCA. It results in an abnormality in the oxygen-carrying protein haemoglobin found in red blood cells. This leads to a rigid, sickle-like shape under certain circumstances.

The terms "sickle cell crisis" or "sickling crisis" may be used to describe several independent acute conditions occurring in patients with SCD, which results in anaemia and crises that could be of many types, including the vaso-occlusive crisis, aplastic crisis, sequestration crisis, haemolytic crisis, and others. The inset image shows a cross-section of a sickle cell with long polymerized sickle haemoglobin (Hb S) strands stretching and distorting the cell shape to look like a crescent.

  4. Sickle cell disease SCD is a blood disorder present at birth. People with SCD have “sickle” shaped red blood cells that stick together and block blood and oxygen from reaching all parts of the body, leading to health problems such as pain, anemia, infections, and stroke.

Apr 12, 2012 Sickle cell disease is most common in people whose families come from Africa, South or Central America, Caribbean islands, Mediterranean countries, India, and Saudi Arabia. Sickle cell disease occurs in approximately one out of every 500 African American births and one out of every 36,000 Hispanic American births. Firstly, sickle cell disease is something I can't comment on other than to say my friend has it, and he goes through so much pain. I do know the basics of it, but wouldn't dream of even trying to dicuss it with you, as I am completely in the dark regarding what you must go through with this. Sickle cell disease involves the red blood cells, or hemoglobin, and their ability to carry oxygen. Normal hemoglobin cells are smooth, round, and flexible, like the letter "O," so they can move through the vessels in our bodies easily. Sickle cell hemoglobin cells are stiff and sticky.
