But Chloroquine has significantly higher rate of retinal toxicity, so it isn't used much anymore. Also, Plaquenil appears to effectively reduce flares in patients with lupus not necessarily by suppressing immunity. How does Plaquenil work? Plaquenil changes the way your immune system works. In some kinds of lupus, your immune system attacks your body instead of protecting it. Plaquenil tries to quiet or slow down the immune system. How do you take Plaquenil? You take Plaquenil as a pill 1 or 2 times a day. Take the pills with food or milk. I originally took Plaquenil Sanofi but this brand is now discontinued. The generic form of this, on my prescription, gives me serious digestion and stomach upsets to a point I spent months trying to figure out what I thought was irritable bowel syndrome. Has anyone found a good alternative UK brand that doesn't create this side affect. Arthritis (non-deforming) or arthralgias associated with the disease will have substantial pain relief with a dose this low. It's infusion intervals are longer, because the turnover of recptors is slower than the production of tnf-a itself. So other meds like Imuran and Cell Cept (mycophenolate mofetil) also reduce flares, but also increases infection. Read more It depends why you are taking Plaquenil in the first place. Apart from some stomach quiziies, I have never stopped this drug, as long as it demonstrated it is working. Other than that we see a few people who have increased skin pigmentation called "plaquenil ochronosis". The dirrence with Remicade (infliximab) is that it blocks the tnf-a receptor, rather than binding tnf-a itself, but it accomplishes the same thing.

Plaquenil is used to treat fatigue, pain, skin rashes, and inflammation, especially around the lungs. It is one of the most frequently used medications for lupus because studies show that it may prevent lupus flares and kidney damage. Many lupus patients will stay on Plaquenil for many years and perhaps indefinitely. I to have been taking plaquenil for at least 6 to 8 months not sure a lil lupie lol anyway and i do feel a difference in my eyes plus my liver enzymes are up i believe that the highest is 47 and mines is 48 the doc says not dangerously high but we need to keep an eye on it. im not sure but i thought that the enzymes were up cuz of the prednisone but now ill have to ask the doc. i too want. The alternative to Plaquenil is a slightly different anti malarial called Quinacrine. Plaquenil replaced Quinacrine formerly called Atabrine for anti malarial prophylaxis so now the Quinacrine has to be made up into pills or gel capsules by a compounding pharmacy.

Hair loss and Plaquenil? DailyStrength My rheumy told me that the hair loss could be from the plaquenil or lupus before telling me to take vitamin b. I knew I was already on a lot of vitamins so I talked to my PCP who put me on them, and I was told not to take anymore than the two multivitamins because one is a prescription iron/ multivitamin combination with a lot of vitamins.
