    Hydroxychloroquine immune suppressant

Had symtoms of malar rash, joint pain especially in hands, fatigue , dry eyes and dry skin . Had a biopsy of skin and confirmed cutaneous lupus. I was put on Plaquenil and for the past 8 years I have been fine with it . Now this year I have been having things pop up that are related to a low immune system.

How many people taking hydroxychloroquine Can plaquenil cause bad teeth

Howdy LadyDi, sorry you are having problems. Plaquenil is what is call an immune modifier. It is not a immune suppressant. Originally it was used to prevent Malaria. Then it was discovered to be effective for the treatment of Lupus. Plaquenil has the least amount of side affects in treating auto immune disorders. Basically, the immune system is a bit out of control. Plaquenil works by suppressing the immune system. Unfortunately you can't tell it to attack just the germs so you suppress all of its function to spare your healthy tissue- in your husband's case, his eyes, mouth, throat. NOTE Plaquinil and hydroxychloroquine are essentially the same drug. As with other drugs that may suppress your immune system, talk to your doctor about any vaccines or surgeries you may have. In addition, be sure to notify him/her of any other medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, that you may be taking.

Does anybody have any input concerning taking Plaquenil for long term therapy ? Some of my doctors think It is the Plaquenil causing it but then some say that Plaquenil is not an immunosuppressant drug that for some reason my immune system is out of wack . I tried to only take 100 mg to see if it would make a difference but I started with terrible joint pain and fatigue so I am back on the 200 mg a day.

My LLMD just precribed Plaquenil to me. so far so good tho I am concerned about the Vision issues with this medication but from everything I read its very rare to have Vision problems and nothing I read said that it was an Immune suppressant. A recent large study of people with cardiovascular disease found that hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil does not increase the risk of infection and methotrexate increases the risk of infection only slightly. The concern with immune suppression is that the virus could replicate more freely and cause more severe or extensive disease, says Dr. Winthrop. The number of patients taking immunosuppressive drugs for the management of autoimmune inflammatory conditions is increasing. The general practitioner needs to be active in preventing, monitoring and managing the adverse effects of these drugs even long after the treatment has ceased.
